Today I went to the dentist and had my usual dentist freak-out anxiety attack.

No one understands my fear of the dentist.

Especially not my parents.

Even though it happens before every appointment, they are always like, what the fuck is wrong with you. Then I start crying and hiding under the covers whining, but I hate him, please don't make me go, as though I were six years old or something.

Anyway, I went. They raped my teeth, smiling, checked my chart where I swear to god all they have written is random platitudes, like photocopies from a book, 200 Great Conversation-Starters.

Then later, my day lightened up as I went to trivia where I was a clutch player, submitting "tamagotchi" in response to: electronic Japanese toy from the 90s.

Everyone was really impressed.

The end.

What's so awesome about BS/BS is how the actors blur the line b/w drama and reality, how they rose to the challange of a sequel to a minor cult movie (really, when you think about it) that used their own youth and beauty as it's stock in trade as much as the locations/direction/script, and made the sequel as much about their own begrudging acceptance of how life is as their "characters"...

it's an old trick, but to see it so well done in an american context, with an actor as fearless as Hawke (who knew???, and, I'm sure you'll agree, Sunset is very much his movie...if Sunrise hinges on her choice to stay in Vienna, and how, by that decision, she effictively "unlocks' him from his tired schtick, then Sunset is about his choice, years later, to reclaim that zeitgeist...now I'm not saying Delpy is furniture, but she is clearly the impetus for some serious slow-burning regret in our hero, in his ethan hawke way, and she's such a well-drawn character that her feelings are never as simple as his caveman impetus...in Sunrise, she's super confident right up until the third act, when she allows us to see the cracks in her facade...same structure to Sunset...remember, she seeks him out this time).

Without the sequel, we'd have never seen the deep layers of characterization and emotion at play here...I can't wait for part three...(and trust me, there will be one...it's also a grand old tradition to follow characters over a lifetime (See Apted's "Up" series, Truffault's "Antoine Doniel Series" (an obvious influence), etc.)

  3. I hate the dentist. However, my dentist works in this office where everyone I swear are hired on their looks. They are all super hot and all females. Really, my dentist is very good looking so it is hard for me to make a complete fool of myself - without being super self conscious.

I think they are on to something!
