Joser wrote about homelessness and sharing wealth and stuff.
That got me thinking.
There are SOOOO many poor people in Bangladesh. 80% of the population lives on less than USD 2 a day.
At first glance, you'd think well-off Bangladeshis must ignore the swollen mass of skinny children that swarm the streets. But time and again, I've seen our wealthy friends slip beggars ten taka, or so, not making a big deal of it, as Efrath and I walk past, contemplating our navels.
Seems like, in Bangladesh, the idea is that if you have it, you share it.
I'm starting to catch on - if I have anything, ANYTHING, in my bag, I give it away. Aside from money, this has extended to pencil crayons, half finished bottles of coke and picked over sandwiches - mid-bite, pieces of chewing gum, jars of hand disinfectant and an imitation spiderman action figure.
Can I begin to descibe the joy on a starving child's face when he/she receives a swig of backwash cola? Isn't that depressing?
And, yes, I have a lot of random objects in my purse.
It is a very big purse.
It is sad and depressing. I can remember the exact moment when I knew I had to be different. It was a cold night and me, I was stoned. I had a beer next to me and a bowl of popcorn. I was watching TV and an infomercial of starving children popped up. There I was, stoned, drunk, eating, under my goose down comforter... warm. Life isn't really so bad. I should complain less.
ReplyDeleteI know what you are talking about. Hey, my country is not very far from where you
ReplyDeleteare and life there not too different.
I dont take anything for granted. Everything I have is a blessing and it really
bothers me when ppl around me (only ppl I really know) dont see it that way.
I also donate to charities on my birthday.
